Day 1
The history and development of the Bowen Technique
The basic physiological principles behind Bowen/Fascial work (PRACTICAL)
An understanding and practice of Bowen-type moves and what they are doing
LUNCH
The basic principles behind establishing therapeutic touch.
Practical set-up for working with mum, partner and baby
Listening skills. Practical around a first consultation
Practical work centering on mum and baby’s heart area
Practical around basic fascial/Bowen work for mum and baby
Day 2
The importance of a safe environment, empathy and eye contact when working with babies
Supporting womb health and posture including optimal fetal positioning during pregnancy (PRACTICAL)
Environmental effects on pregnancy and in utero
Treatment during pregnancy – side lying positions – encouraging womb health and OFP
Practical advice and exercises for mum during pregnancy (depending on scope of practice)
Explanation of Functional Range when working with families and babies and practical on this
LUNCH
Understanding the effects of compression, rotation, shearing, traction and other forces that the baby might experience in utero and at birth
Bowen work around the neck
Palpation of the atlas, axis and occiput (PRACTICAL) and simple fascial work around the neck
Understanding dural tube connections between the sacrum and the neck and occiput in baby and mum.
The relationship between top and bottom in mum and baby: Psoas/Neck, Pelvic Floor/Mouth, Pelvis/TMJ etc and how to work with them (exercises and hands on work)
The Psoas in the mother and the baby and how to work with it (PRACTICAL)
The importance of tummy time – practical skills and advice
Bowen work around the hyoid and its connections (PRACTICAL)
The Brachial plexus. How to create more space for the shoulder during birth and how to treat using simple fascial techniques. (PRACTICAL)
DAY 3
An overview of mechanical and pharmacological interventions used in the birth process:
The principles and ramifications of interventions:
Fetal Monitoring
Epidurals and other pain relief
Induction and Augmentation
C section
Ventouse
Forceps
The use of forceps and suction, how that impacts the baby and how to work with the imprints (PRACTICAL)
Presentation on the temporal bones and TMJ in a baby. How to treat and assess (PRACTICAL)
Cranial nerves and their basic function in a baby how to work with them using Bowen
LUNCH
Planned and emergency Caesareans – the potential ramifications
How to work with mother and baby who have experienced c sections
Colic – an overview of possible causes
The role of the umbilicus prenatally and at birth – its ramifications and how to work with umbilical affect and shock
Bowen work around the abdomen and navel (PRACTICAL)
Babies who have been born ‘normally’ but are exhibiting symptoms such as colic, restlessness etc and how to work with it
Working with Posterior (back to back) babies
Day 4
A look at the baby’s cranium - its differences to an adult and areas that might need addressing
Plagiocephaly etc and head shapes and how to work with them (PRACTICAL)
Looking at the ramifications of induced deliveries
Working with Mums after birth (including pubic symphysis issues) (PRACTICAL)
LUNCH
Maternal scars and their impact on sexuality, pelvic and womb health etc.
Scar work – practical around C section scars and lumbar spine (PRACTICAL)
Overview of microbiome and support and advice after antibiotics, caesarean etc
Watching for integration time – non-verbal cues
Bringing it all together
- Students will practice the practical skills needed to work hands-on with babies and their parents
- Students will display an understanding of prenatal and postnatal influences on babies’ behaviour and functioning.
